Manager of Career Development Office under Centre for Student Development UTP, Madam Roslina begun the session by stating the objectives of why students should go for an internship program. The main reasons would be to experience the working life, acquire valuable skills, gain professional feedback, experiment with one’s interests and passion as well as to create professional connections. An internship is a training program that integrates classroom learning into the real-world professional environment. An internship can also be considered as a monitored work experience that has intentional learning outcomes and goals for students.

Madam Roslina shared that you may find internship opportunities through online job portals, company websites, LinkedIn, virtual career fairs and lastly through social media. You can directly visit a company’s career portal at their website to explore your options. Having good connections with seniors or individuals working in desired companies may also be helpful. Madam Roslina then explained that resumes are generally subjective and there is no right or wrong way to create one however it is best to shape one’s resume to make it as presentable as possible. On average, a candidate’s resume has only ten seconds to impress a recruiter so that their resume gets shortlisted. This is a given as recruiters have tons of resumes to screen through every day. It is also advised to personalize your resume to better suit the goals of each company applied to.

When applying for an internship, candidates are advised to be mindful of the location of the internship program as well as the relevance of the job scopes with the studied course. Another neglected aspect when applying for an internship is the working environment. It necessary to know the place where you will be fulfilling your internship training be it an office or a plant. Last but not least, allowance. The amount of allowance provided is purely at the discretion of the company, varying from one company to another. The next step after the internship application would be attending the interview. Madam Roslina pointed out a few things that candidates should take note of such as looking presentable, testing your microphone and webcam before a virtual interview, be prepared to answer common and uncommon interview questions, take notes and ask about the recruitment process. Ms Roslina also touched on how to accept or decline an internship offer. When accepting an offer, always consider before accepting to avoid second thoughts as well as to select the best choice of internship placement suitable for your goals. On the other hand, when declining an offer, it advisable to give consideration for the following points : decide why you want to decline, be certain, respond within 24 hours, be professional and lastly be thankful.

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” – Steve Jobs
